Christmas: The Promise Fulfilled
For generations, God’s people waited.
They carried promises of rescue, redemption, and a kingdom shaped by righteousness and peace. They trusted that God would come to save them, even when the fulfillment seemed far away.
Then, in the quiet of an ordinary night, the waiting ended.
The promise became a person.
At Christmas, we light the Christ Candle and celebrate the Light who has come into the world.
God’s rescue does not arrive through human power or grandeur. It comes as a child, born in humility and laid in a manger. In Jesus, the kindness and love of God appear among us.
The eternal Son enters our humanity to bring us into his life and make all things new.
The Savior has come.
The news is first entrusted to shepherds keeping watch through the night. Heaven breaks into their ordinary lives with a message of great joy for all people.
The child born in Bethlehem is the promised Savior, Christ the Lord. In him, God has drawn near to rescue, restore, and reconcile his creation.
Glory to God. Peace on earth.
Hear now heaven’s announcement that God’s promised rescue has come:
8 And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. 10 And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,
14 “Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased
Luke 2:8–14 ESV
Jesus Christ is born. Our Savior has come. Like the shepherds who first received this news, may we carry the joy and peace of Jesus into the world.

This year, rather than provide a sample Christmas sermon, we encourage you to create your own missional Christmas service that will work well for your context. You can create a worship experience that feels recognizably Christian but has easy entry points for unchurched neighbors and guests.
