Malaysia is a multi-racial, multi-cultural country, composed of Malay, Chinese, Indian, and the aborigines. The Malays are the majority, and Islam is the religion of the Federation. It is not easy to share and preach the gospel openly.
One of our main challenges is the influence of Islamic laws in the Constitution. It is illegal for other religions to preach to the Muslims. We have to be careful of that to keep peace and freedom of religion here. With that being a major filter, we are mostly left with the Chinese and Indians. But there are exceptions.
I still remember those days back in college. Everyone was doing their best to achieve their goals, studying hard, and rushing for deadlines. It is during such a high-pressure environment that we reveal our character. And it was also the best opportunity to reveal Christ’s character in me.
With the grace of God, he blessed me with passion and purpose in the study of sports and exercise science. I was able to learn well and score well. I was able to grasp complex ideas about human physiology as well as unfamiliar scientific terms. My classmates then approached me for extra tutorials after class, and I gladly said yes with a serving heart. God blessed me with the gift of learning not just for me to score good grades, but to help me lift up the friends around me.
I studied with them and shared with them passionately about my understanding from the previous lectures. I continued to do it with a serving heart. To my surprise, one of my friends not only complimented me on my knowledge and intelligence, but he also said that he could feel Jesus from me. He felt kindness, sincerity, warmth, and an intention of good for all. I nearly cried when I realized that I was a chosen vessel to manifest God’s light and character with my humble abilities.
This friend of mine is a Christian. I’m glad that he brought this up in front of other non-Christian classmates, including Muslims. The rest wondered why he said that he could see Jesus in me. Some asked me why I was so kind and why I was so willing to teach. Other seniors would have charged them an hourly rate for tutoring. This is when I took the opportunity to share what I believe. I shared who my Lord and Saviour is and what he has done. I told them that I simply follow Jesus.
Below are some approaches that are helping young people share Christ’s good news in natural, everyday ways in Malaysia:
Seek Christ and allow him to teach you who you are in Christ. This builds the foundation, the mindset, and purpose which will guide you through your daily lives in whatever you do.
Whatever you do, do it in your best ability with God and shine. If you are a student, learn well. If you are an artist, draw well. But all in all, do it with God and for God.
God will attract others to you. To the physical eyes, they see you. But spiritually, it is the glory of God that their soul sees, and they want to know more.
Invite your friends to know more about Christ. Guide them into healthy practices. Lead them into topics that help them grow spiritually. It can be one-on-one or invite them to join your church events.
The good news of Christ is not only spoken but shown through our daily actions and intentions.
